I hate carving pumpkins.

I know...don't tell my kids. Thankfully I know that they won't read this right now.

Perhaps it was more stressful this year because we did it during the day when Dad was at work. Somehow letting him be in charge and just watching and taking pictures from the sidelines is much more pleasant!

I just knew that it would take a very long time. Especially since the kids picked out a 41 pound monster of a pumpkin! (Thanks again Nana for taking us to the pumpkin patch and getting us the biggest pumpkin ever--we do really appreciate that)!

Kenzie is not making a happy face here. She is simply demonstrating how I was feeling during most of this process, (and she was tired of being strapped into her chair). Somehow I lucked out and we didn't carve pumpkins for the last couple of years.

The truth is I love my kids. I want them to have enjoyable memories of their childhood. I want them to be happy when they think of holidays that we celebrated together. Hopefully they will remember the excitement of it and not the stress of, "...let me do it!" "I want to see!" "Ooooh! That stinks! I'm not putting my hand in there!" "Can I help now?!" And the constant hovering at your elbow--seriously, it was amazing no one got jabbed in the eye!

When we were finally done (it took a good couple of hours--note to self, get a much smaller pumpkin next time), Kevin walked away saying, "That was so much fun!"

That made it all worth it for me. Really, that's what it's all about. Again, I love my kids and ultimately I want them to be happy. And truthfully, it really wasn't that bad. We all survived! And for a short moment out of the day no one was fighting, no one was complaining, no one was zoning out watching t.v. or playing video games. So I will chalk it up to a success and get ready for what tomorrow may bring. Whatever it is, it will always be another day in paradise for me!

Instead of carving, we tend to paint the pumpkins. It is so much easier and you don't have to worry about your pumpkin rotting!!
If any one carves a pumpkin, it is only Katey ... and she can do it on her own!!!
I love your 2 little ballerinas. Too cute!
This year I got out of carving because the big boys wanted to do their own, so all I had to do was gut them. Usually I end up carving those intricate designs that come in the books. Talk about hand cramping and hours of kids ignoring the process while mom does it.
yo no liko carving pumpkins either. I'm not sure if it's the wielding of sharp knives by my children, or the mess, or the stank, or the mess, or the stickiness, or the cleanup, or the tears from fights over what face to carve. but I remember having fun myself doing it, and hopefully as the kids get older and I worry less about what inevitably will happen (no stitches this year, thank heaven), it'll be more enjoyable.
that's one mother of a pumpkin!!
You are such a patient mom! Hope you had a fun Halloween (despite all the pumpkin guts)!
The pumpkins came out sooo good! Fun! Fun!
